Zanzibar Travel Tips For A First Visit
The tide runs the day
On the east coast the lagoon empties a long way. Boat departures follow the tide table, not a fixed schedule, so pickup times are confirmed close to the day.
Distances are short, journeys are not
Nowhere on Zanzibar is far, but roads pass through villages and speeds are low. Nungwi to Paje is a couple of hours. Build travel time into any day trip.
Dress with the local context in mind
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Swimwear belongs on the beach and at the pool; in villages and in Stone Town, shoulders and knees covered is respectful and appreciated.
Cash and cards
Larger hotels take cards; small restaurants, markets and village shops generally do not. Carry some cash, and ask before assuming a card will work.
Sun, water and mosquitoes
Equatorial sun is stronger than it feels on a breezy boat. Bring reef-safe sun cream, drink more water than you expect, and pack repellent for evenings and forest walks. Speak to a travel clinic about malaria precautions before you travel.
Arrange your airport transfer in advance
Arrivals are often late in the evening and the drive to the east or north coast takes over an hour. A pre-booked private transfer with your flight number means someone is waiting whatever time you land.
