Adding A Tanzania Safari To Your Zanzibar Holiday

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, and the mainland parks are genuinely reachable from the island. The question is not whether you can add a safari, but which park matches the number of days you can give it.

Two to three days: Nyerere or Mikumi

Nyerere National Park (the former Selous) is a short flight from Zanzibar and adds something the northern parks cannot: boat safaris on the Rufiji River alongside game drives. Mikumi is equally accessible, with open floodplain that makes wildlife easy to spot — a strong first safari.

Three days or more: Serengeti and Ngorongoro

The northern circuit is further and requires a flight to Arusha or a park airstrip. It is worth it, but not in two days. Ngorongoro’s crater floor holds dense, year-round wildlife; the Serengeti’s plains are vast and seasonal, with the migration’s location changing through the year.

What a safari from Zanzibar includes

A properly arranged safari from the island covers the whole chain, not just the game drives.

Plan it before you fly

Park fees, camp availability and internal flights all move with the season. Arranging the safari before you arrive gives you a written itinerary and a fixed price, rather than whatever is left over when you get there.
