How Many Days Do You Need In Zanzibar?
The honest answer is seven nights for a first visit. Fewer works, but you spend a larger share of it moving. Here is what each length realistically allows.
Five nights
Enough for one coast and two excursions, plus real beach time.
- One base on the north or east coast
- One boat day (Mnemba, Nakupenda or Safari Blue)
- One cultural or inland half day (Stone Town, spice farm or Jozani)
- Two full days doing nothing
Seven nights
The comfortable length: two areas, or one beach base plus a night in Stone Town.
- Five nights on the beach, two in Stone Town
- Two boat excursions on different coasts
- Stone Town walking tour and a spice farm visit
- Space to move a trip if the weather turns
Ten nights or more
This is where a mainland safari fits without cutting into your beach days. Nyerere or Mikumi need two to three days from Zanzibar; the Serengeti and Ngorongoro need three or more.
Leave slack for the tides and the sea
Ocean excursions depend on conditions. If your only free day is your last day, a rough sea means you miss it. Book boat trips early in your stay and keep a spare day.
